About Us / History

This journey started with a phone call and a bucket list. It was baby bruddah (aka "Bear") on the line declaring "Hey, I signed up for a triathlon." ResidentDogWhisperer quickly realized that she could not let Bear beat her to the punch, so she and the Chief Cook 'n' Bottle Washer elevated "do a triathlon" from the bottom of their bucket lists. Definitely a crazy idea - neither could swim very well, and hadn't been in a pool in years. Given their healthy fear of the water, they signed up for a local sprint tri with a 300 yard pool swim; seemed like an impossible distance at the time. Once they (barely) successfully completed that first tri, they were hooked like a sunfish on a Snoopy pole - grinning like fools despite what the timer clock read.

Fast forward to the next summer and they were signed up for a few more tri's including one with a lake swim. Huh, dark deep water, creatures of the deep, and a mass start made for the perfect recipe for two classic panic attacks as both ResidentDogWhisperer and Chief Cook 'n' Bottle Washer side stroked to a near dead last in the swim...but they finished! Not to be undone by their "near-death" experiences, they decided to give it another go, and were still hooked. The tri madness was now inescapable.

They remain "mere mortals" who are doing this for fun, for health and fitness (blah blah blah...), but mostly because it gets them off the couch, gives them some really funny stories and all the training let's them eat with (near) abandon! Oh, and they intend to drag as many family and friends as they can into the offbeat world of triathlon.

They aren't particularly fast or athletically gifted, but they are stubborn and okay with serving as the crash test dummy for others. A scant two years after that first insanely long 300 meter pool swim, ResidentDogWhisperer finished the Augusta Half Iron in 2010, and the Chief Cook 'n' Bottle Washer finished Ironman Arizona in November 2010 to celebrate turning 50. What's next? They (and baby bruddah Bear!) are signed-up to do Ironman Florida, 5 November 2011. This blog seemed like a fun way to share their antics along the way!
